Did you know that many of our Presidents have had pets in the White House?

Posted: 06/01/2009

Thomas Jefferson 1801-1809 received two bear cubs, a gift from Lewis and Clark the explorers.  He also was given a mockingbird and two Briard dogs.

James Buchanan 1857-1861 was given a herd of elephants from the King of Siam. President Buchanan already had his own pair of Bald Eagles and a Newfoundland dog named Lara.

It is believed that President Calvin Coolidge 1923-1929 had the most pets. Some of the pets that stayed with the Coolidge's include Smoky the bobcat, Rebecca the raccoon, two canaries, Nip and Tuck, a baby bear, two lion cubs, a wallaby and a miniature hippopotamus!

Calvin Coolidge was once quoted as saying, "Any man who does not like dogs and want them about, does not deserve to be in the White House."
