A Horse And Her Owner Posted: 05/01/2008
Both George and Fly joined the Union Army in 1861. Every day through rough weather and harsh conditions they helped the Union fight for control of the Mississippi River. At one point during their fight, they found themselves surrounded by Confederate troops. Somehow, Fly was able to break free, and with George on her back they plunged off a cliff into the Mississippi River. Fly was able to swim both George and herself, safely to dry land. Even though Fly and George had a few more close calls during their service, Fly proved that horses have the ability to handle stressful situations well, and to think fast. Fly lived to be 39 years old and she spent the rest of her life after service happily working on the farm with George.
