A Whale Of A StoryPosted: 04/03/2008 Unfortnately, whales will find an opening into costal inlets and get stranded on the beaches. They become disoriented and cannot find their way back out to the ocean. A lot of times they end up dying a slow and painful death on the sandy coast. This was about to be the case for a 12ft pygmy sperm whale and her 4ft male calf who found themselves beached off the east coast of New Zealand. Wildlife rescue groups had managed four times to put a net around both whales and drag them back into the water. However, being scared and confused the whales kept returning back to the beach. Just when the rescue team was at the point of exhaustion, they heard different sounds coming from beneath the water. The sounds were coming from Moko, a dolphin who played frequently with the local swimmers. The whales started returning Mokoメs sounds and amazingly started to follow Moko. Moko led them away from the sand bar and out a narrow channel into the open sea. Moko saved the two whales from certain death, proving once again that dolphins will come to the aid of others. | ||||||
