Turkeys are a lot smarter than we give them credit for!

Posted: 11/01/2007

Everyone has heard of how "unintelligent" turkeys can be, however this story shows another side.  A lady and her husband were astounded to see two wild turkeys walk out from a wooded area onto a busy two lane country road.   One turkey faced oncoming traffic in one direction and extended its wings out, while the other faced oncoming traffic in the other direction and held out its wings as well.  Baffled drivers came to a halt and everyone waited to see what the turkeys would do next.  Abruptly out of the forest came a whole family - mom, with six little baby turkeys.  The turkey family proceeded across the road in a single file. When they had all safely reached the other side of the road, the two turkeys handling traffic lowered their wings and followed them into the shrubs.

Unfornately there have been many cases were people have raised turkeys under cruel conditions on factory farms to turn a profit. However there are some sanctuaries that prevent the unusual, torture and cruelty to the turkeys. For example every Thanksgiving people come from all over to the Farm Sanctuary in California.  Here they find the famous "hugging turkey" Lydia.  This turkey actually will run towards humans with her wings out.  When people bend down Lydia will press her chest against them with her neck over their shoulders.  These stories show that the turkey is a truly amazing bird in its own right!
